International Primary Curriculum

Royal Primary Academy is an International School and welcomes all children to a caring environment which encourages the pursuit of excellence in all areas of life.

RPA will begin its foundation year in 2012 and will work to sustain an international reputation for academic excellence and outstanding success in preparing young people to lead active, purposeful lives.

Emphasis on the international perspective we place on our school is not only through our curriculum but also through our teachers and student population. Celebration and tolerance of all religions is a strong component in our school as we endeavor to teach our students that compassion, love and respect are the basis of our code of conduct in our school.

This is the philosophical foundation on which a RPA education is based. At RPA, every child is given the opportunity to:

Develop an appreciation of intellectual challenge and a love of lifelong learning

Gain the confidence to question, challenge and be creative

Give and receive warmth and human understanding and

Belong to a community in which to experience the beauty and joy of life itself

The School will encourage each individual to:

Achieve full potential in all areas of endeavor

Achieve proficiency and confidence in communication, problem solving and the use of new technologies

Attain self confidence and develop an enthusiastic commitment to excellence

Develop an understanding of and respect for the values of others

Acquire the skills needed to use leisure time in a fulfilling, responsible and creative fashion

Contribute to the wellbeing of their local, national and international community

When this is our attitude, we help to create a community where everyone can enjoy safe, security, cooperative learning and freedom from all forms of harassment. This is the kind of community we foster at RPA and each person has an important part to play in maintaining it.

All members of the school community are expected to relate to one another in ways that will ensure that every person is able to:

Be respected and valued as an individual

Feel safe and secure

Be free to work and learn in a positive environment

Be treated fairly

Be free from bullying

Have his/her privacy and property respected

Feel free to seek and accept appropriate help and support when it is needed.

The school considers those behaviors which does not demonstrate respect for these basic needs and freedoms of others is unacceptable

Royal Tots Academy played the role to unite people around the world through this event, we taught how to tolerate each other, we taught that religions from all around the world can be celebrated with harmony. And all the teachers, regardless of what religion they are, joined together and made Christmas in our school such a wonderful happy occasion.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Hark! The herald angels sing
‘Christ is born in Bethlehem!’
Peace on earth and mercy mild;
God and sinners reconciled.’
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With angelic host proclaim,
‘Christ is born in Bethlehem!’
Hark the herald angels sing,

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be far away.

A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the king, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum
When we come

Baby Jesus, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give our King, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum
On my drum

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum

We are so delighted to welcome your child to our Playgroup class, which we call Da Vinci class. You might be curious why we named our class after the famous Leonardo Da Vinci. Beside his worldwide known paintings, Da Vinci was also an Italian Renaissance architect, musician, anatomist, inventor, engineer, sculptor and geometer. He has been described as the archetype of the “Renaissance Man” and as a universal genius. Leonardo is famous for his masterly paintings, such as The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. He is also known for designing many inventions that anticipated modern technology, although few of these designs were constructed in his lifetime. In addition, he helped advance the study of anatomy, astronomy and civil engineering. Renaissance humanism saw no mutually exclusive polarities between science and art. We are hoping our future Da Vinci class will be as inspiring, inventive and groundbreaking leaders as Da Vinci before, in the future.

All about Early Literacy!
What We Know About Early Language and Literacy Development
Early language and literacy (reading and writing) development begins in the first three years of life and is closely linked to a child’s earliest experiences with books and stories. The interactions that young children have with literacy materials such as books, papers and crayons, and with the adults in their live are the foundation for language, reading and writing development.

Early literacy research states that:

Language, reading and writing skills develop at the same time and are intimately linked.

Early literacy development is a continuous process that begins in the first years of life.

Early literacy skills develop in real life settings through positive interactions with literacy materials and other people.

Early Literacy Does Not Mean Early Reading
Our current understanding of early language and literacy development has provided new ways of helping children learn to talk, read and write. But it does not recommend “the teaching of reading” to younger and younger children. Formal instruction which pushes infants and toddlers to achieve adult models of literacy (i.e., the actual reading and writing of words) is not developmentally appropriate. Early literacy theory emphasizes the more natural unfolding skills through enjoyment of books, the importance of positive interactions between adults and children and the critical role of literacy rich experiences.

What Young Children Like in Books
Children aged 2-3years

Books that tell simple stories.

Simple rhyming books that they can memorize.

Bed time books.

Books about counting, the alphabet, shapes or sizes.

Animal books, vehicle books, books about playtime.

Books about saying hello and goodbye.

“Formal instruction which pushes infants and toddlers to achieve adult models of literacy is not developmentally appropriate.”

Ways to Share Books with Babies and Toddlers
Make Sharing Books Part of Every Day

Read or share stories at bedtime or on the car.

Have Fun!:)
Children can learn from you that books are fun, which is an important thing in learning to read.

A Few Minutes is OK Don’t Worry if You Don’t Finish.
Younger children’s attention span is shorter than older children, but as they grow, they will be able to sit and listen longer.

Talk or Sing About the Pictures
You don’t have read the words to tell a story.

Show Children the Cover Page
Explain what the story is all about.

Make It Personal
Talk about your own family, pets or community when you are reading about others in a story.

Make the Story Comes Alive
Create voices for the story characters and use your body to tell the story.

It’s ALL ABOUT ME!
Over the next few weeks, our Da Vinci class will begin a topic, called “All About Me”. This unit is part of the Early Years Program of the International Primary Curriculum. This curriculum has been especially written for young children who are in schools out of their home and sets out clearly what children should learn in four groups or ‘strands’ these are called ‘Independence and Interdependence’, ‘Communicating’, ‘Exploring’ and ‘Healthy Living’. Our children will learn a great deal about relationships and how to deal with new people in their live, i.e., their new teachers and school environment. That is why this particular Unit suits our class best. They will also be introduced to books, songs and simple rhymes, as well as paying attention and concentrating skills. Each day, the children will be given opportunities to express their emotions and emotional needs, which will help them to develop their ability to cope with changes.

Meet The Letterlanders!
As part of our language teaching, we will be introducing the class to the alphabet using Letterland. This is a well-established and successful system for teaching children to read and write. Letter shapes and sounds are abstract and often hard for children to learn. In Letterland, letters become friendly ’pictogram’ characters. For example, the pictogram character for letter a, as shown here is Annie Apple. Your child will learn about the characters which make up the Letterland alphabet. These characters will help your child to know and understand letter shapes and sounds.

This month, Da Vinci class will be introduced to Annie Apple, she is a nice and friendly apple from Letterland. We will also incorporate Math in daily lesson. During these first few weeks, we are going to introduce simple Math songs and games, as part of our language teaching, we will be introducing the class to the alphabet using Letterland. This is a well-established and successful system for teaching children to read and write. Letter shapes and sounds are abstract and often hard for children to learn. In Letterland, letters become friendly ’pictogram’ characters. For example, the pictogram character for letter a, as shown here is Annie Apple. Your well as the concept of one-on-one correspondence and color recognition.

As of Mandarin subject, our native Mandarin Laoshi will cover simple Mandarin vocabularies, such as cat, rabbit, bird, number 1 and 2. The children will learn Mandarin through hands-on activities and singing catchy Mandarin songs, such as Xiao Ya Ga Ga (Duck song).

Physical Exercise for All!
Physical activity starts at an early age. Babies take pleasure from discovering and then controlling their own movement. They delight in realizing they can get themselves from one place to another, first by crawling and later by walking and they relish practicing and polishing their newly developing skills.

Physical Activities Recommendations for Preschoolers

Preschoolers are beginning to explore relationship between objects and how parts and whole fits together, so activities that promote motor skills such as building cubby houses out of boxes or blocks.

This is a great time to develop the social ability to play with other children. So it is good for parents to arrange ’playdate’ with their peers.

Both gross and fine motor skills develop during this stage. Physical activities should include both. Practicing simple sport skills have been found increased the likelihood of participating in sports. Balancing, jumping, kicking, throwing and catching ball, beanbag tossing activity are all FUN activities that young children will enjoy.

To practice their gross motor skill, toddlers will practice running, swinging their arms, and following the lyrics of music and rhythm properly. Toddlers will also start to exercise their fine motor skills and build their sense of art through songs, paintings, and pasting materials such as cotton and felt on pictures.

Above all, Toddlers always need to learn how to adapt and socialize with friends, get used to a routine, and learn how to say “goodbye”, “thank you” and “please”. Toddlers need to maintain this routine both at school and home.

The Toddler Tantrum Survival Guide
By: Kristen J. Gough

Screaming. Kicking. Occasional biting. If you have not yet witnessed a toddler tantrum firsthand, you’ve certainly heard about them. While these mini-meltdowns are a normal part of a child’s development, there are ways parents can help toddlers to experience tantrums less often and with less intensity— something that can make both toddlers and parents happier!

When and Why Children Have Tantrums
A. Tantrums are a normal developmental stage
B. Tantrums often occur as a reaction to strong emotions.

We’ve all heard of “The Terrible Twos,” but in many children tantrums begin far before the first birthday, sometimes as early as nine months. With a consistent approach to dealing with tantrums, your toddler will most likely outgrow them by the time he reaches three or four years of age.

Tantrums often come when your toddler is experiencing strong emotions but doesn’t know how to tell you about them, or how to deal with themselves. “If you understood everything but couldn’t talk as fast, you would be angry as well,” explains Dr. Ravinder Khaira, a pediatrician at Sutter Health in Sacramento, California, and the father of four-year-old twin girls. “Toddlers have tantrums because they want to become more independent,” Khaira says. “They want to do things like put on their clothes or feed themselves and they become frustrated with their limitations and the inability to communicate.”

Avoiding Tantrums
A.Take the time to play and talk with your toddler regularly.
B.Have clear rules and guidelines for your toddler.
C.Treat your child with respect.

The first step to avoiding tantrums is establishing good communication with your child, advises Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the bestselling book and DVD, The Happiest Toddler on the Block. He suggests three steps to having a great relationship with your little one.

First, “Feed the Meter.” “Just as feeding dimes into a parking meter all day long protects you from dreaded tickets, many five- and ten-minute helpings of playtime throughout each day ward off temper outbursts and create a growing relationship of cooperation and caring with your toddler.”

Second, establish clear and consistent limits to behavior. Karp believes that toddlers are a lot like little cavemen, primitive in their expressions of emotions, a bit unruly, and in need of guide-lines to follow.

Third, treat your child with respect. When your child is trying to express her emotions, take the time to try to understand her message. She’s much more likely to listen—and to obey you—if she feels like you’re listening to her concerns regularly.

Tantrum Triggers

Physical discomfort, such as hunger, tiredness, or pain.

Emotion overload, fear, excitement, boredom, stress.

Attention seeking.

Some tantrum triggers are easy to pinpoint. If your child is hungry, tired, or sick, he’s much more likely to have a tantrum, just as an adult might have problems keeping a happy face in the same situation.

Other tantrum triggers take a bit of detective work. Situations that evoke strong emotions can also bring equally dramatic meltdowns. A doctor’s visit may induce fear.

A drawn out shopping visit may test your child’s patience. Even a long play-date may over stimulate a child to the point of a tantrum. Consider the source of the tantrum before you decide how to deal with it—much like a doctor determines an illness before pre-scribing specific medication. It may be a matter of getting your child something to eat. Or, as with the doctor’s appointment, you may need to sit down with your child and explain the situation in simple words.

Ignore the behavior and do not establish eye contact.

Remove the child from the situation if necessary.

Give your child positive attention when he is being good.

Redirect your child’s attention for milder tantrums.

Do not give in to the child’s demands during the tantrum.

There are those moments when your normally submissive sweet-heart becomes a pint-sized terror. When those times occur, it’s important to put your own emotions in check before you try to help your toddler. Penny Glass, Ph.D., Director of the Child Development Program at the Children’s National Medical Center has counseled countless parents who come in to her clinic exasperated with their child’s behavior.

“Once a tantrum occurs the most effective way to deal with it is to ignore it,” says Dr. Glass.

While your child is in the throes of emotion do not establish eye contact. You may want to put the child in her room or another safe location and let him stay there, under your supervision, until he’s approach-able. When you feel your child is past the behavior, give him attention and eye contact. “By giving your child attention when he’s being good, he’s more likely to end his tantrum or have a less intense tantrum when you don’t give him attention during a tantrum.” For less severe tantrums, you might want to try distracting or redirecting your child’s focus on something else. If, for in-stance, he wants to hold the telephone, try to get him interested in a toy phone or a book.

Glass advises that you not dwell on the tantrum afterward, be-cause that again draws attention to negative behavior. In-stead, seek out opportunities to praise your child doing some-thing good. “What the child generally wants is to be loved and liked. They enjoy finding ways to do that.”

Tantrums at home are one thing, but tantrums in the middle of the library, grocery store, or another public place are quite another. Be consistent with your approach to your child’s tantrums at home. Glass refers to this as “practice” for your approach in a public place. If your child has a tantrum in public do what you would at home, even if that means leaving the store or a friend’s house.

Each expert stresses that you shouldn’t give in to your child’s demands while he’s in the throes of a tantrum. “If you give in, you’re setting up a scenario where the child thinks that he can get what he wants by having a tantrum. And that’s not the position you want to be in,” cautions Glass.

There are days when you’ll be the perfect parent and days where parenthood is more a matter of survival. When those difficult days come, remember that parenting is a learning process for both you and your toddler. As you help your child deal with her emotions, you’ll be setting up a relationship and trust that will extend from the terrible twos into the tumultuous teens and beyond. As Jen Singer, mother of two and author of 14 Hours ‘Til Bedtime puts it, “Toddler tantrums are nor-mal. They just don’t make a sticker for it in you child’s memory book.”
